Manufacturing and Production

Case Study 1

Client Sector & Size

Client Industry: Corrugated Box Production and Sheet Board

Annual Turnover: £16m with approximately 90 employees

Output Achieved by UK & Global

  • Maintaining continuous Property & Business Interruption insurance cover when the
Sprinkler system was considered to be insufficient for Insurance purposes.
  • UK & Global also managed to gain a Financial Contribution from the Insurer
towards an Hydraulics Test during the evaluation period.

Stability of cover and premium expenditure was achieved during a transitional period which was dependent on the support of the Insurer.

Client Requirement

  • The Client had inherited a Sprinkler system which had been developed in a hybrid manner and was uncertain of its technical capabilities
  • The uncertainty of the protection provided by the Sprinkler meant that the number of Insurers willing to offer cover for the Client was restricted
  • This resulted in a lack of options for the Client in terms of achieving premium reductions

UK & Global Solution

UK & Global facilitated the following:

  • An independent Hydraulics Analysis test was arranged
  • A financial contribution was made by the Insurer towards the cost of the Hydraulics Analysis test

Outcome & Benefit to the Client

  • The output of the Analysis Report resulted in greater clarity and understanding of the protection provided and options to enhance the Sprinkler system if required
  • This directly resulted in an increase of the number of quotations offered at the following renewal
  • A cost reduction of 15% was achieved in respect of the Property and Business Interruption premium and enhancements to the policy wording, with the inclusion of Machinery Breakdown cover, were agreed with the Insurer (Affiliated FM)

Case Study 2

Client Sector & Size

Client Industry: Manufacture of Printed Circuit Boards

Annual Turnover: £6m with approximately 58 employees

Output Achieved by UK & Global

  • Addressed an increase in the number of Employer’s Liability claims
  • Reduction in EL premium through implementation on an enhanced H&S
programme, agreed with the client’s EL Insurer, over a period of time

Close liaison with the client’s board and the key Liability Insurer partner, Chubb, was central to the successful resolution of the no of the claims and the premium reduction which ensured.

Client Requirement

  • The Client began to experience a number of low level Employer’s Liability Claims
  • The Liability Insurer, Chubb, subsequently stipulated a number of improvements in the Client’s Health and Safety Management programme
  • Chubb’s concern was that they would not be able to successfully defend the EL Claims and there was an ongoing risk of further EL Claims being received
  • The Client was initially somewhat sceptical of the value of the requirements as they considered their operations to be of a relatively low level risk

UK & Global Solution

  • UK & Global commissioned a Health and Safety Management Audit, which was undertaken by Workplace Risk Management Ltd, to provide an independent overview
  • The lack of compliance in some areas of the Client’s Health and Safety Management policies and procedures became immediately apparent

Outcome & Benefit to the Client

  • An agreed implementation timetable was established between the Client and Workplace Risk Management Ltd which was acceptable to Chubb
  • The Client gained the benefit of improved Health and Safety structures, clarity of responsibilities/roles, and training needs
  • Not only were Chubb happy to continue to insure the Client but an 18% reduction in the Liability premium was achieved at the following renewal

Case Study 3

Client Sector & Size

Client Industry: Manufacture of Food Packaging

Annual Turnover: £36m with approximately 338 employees

Output Achieved by UK & Global

  • Addressed an increasing number of Employer’s Liability claims
  • Control & Reduction of Employer’s Liability premium over a 2 year period
  • Facilitated change of a reactive approach to Health & Safety and increasing
premiums through introduction of independent H&S Consultants and close liaison
with the client’s key Liability Insurer.

The key to the improvement being the client’s board being persuaded, through the presentation of their own Employer’s Liability and H&S Data, that a fundamental change in culture was required.

Client Requirement

  • The Client was experiencing a year on year increase in the number of Employer’s Liability claims and also in the settlement costs of the claims
  • This resulted in the incumbent Liability Insurer to considerably increase their premium after a number of years of losses
  • In addition, the Client was having difficulty in attracting alternative Insurers in view of the relatively heavy nature of their industry and the level of Employer’s Liability claims
  • As the manual workforce totalled around 350 employees, the causes of the increase needed to be evaluated and established
  • It became apparent that the experience of the Managers responsible for Health and Safety was relatively limited and that there were gaps in the knowledge base

UK & Global Solution

  • UK & Global arranged for Workplace Risk Management Ltd to undertake an audit of the Client’s Health and Safety Management structure.
  • The Client subsequently appointed WRM Ltd to act as its “Competent Person” in addition to establishing managerial responsibilities at different levels from the Boardroom to Operational level.
  • It took a period of three years for the number of Employer’s Liability claims to significantly reduce but each year showed an improvement.

Outcome & Benefit to the Client

  • The annual Insurance premium in respect of the Employer’s Liability cover has now returned to the levels of three years previous.
  • The number of Employer’s Liability claims has now significantly reduced.
  • The Client considers that it “has control of Employer’s Liability” once more.
